Health and Safety at work is a vital part of working life, and if your staff use Respiratory equipment (RPE) as part of their work equipment, it is in your interest that respirators work properly and fit correctly. The HSE guidance note HSE 282/28 (paragraphs 9 & 10) informs companies about the correct use and fitting of RPE. Although only a guide, if this information is adhered to correctly, your company will be well within the law regarding respirators.

Masks should undergo specific testing, as recommended by the HSE information document 282/28. This includes a series of exercises to be performed wearing the masks, over a specific time period. For each member of staff 10 minutes should be allocated for the series of exercises. There are 7 exercises, which should be performed for a minute each. If the member of staff fails one exercise, the whole series should be taken again. This is to ensure staff know exactly how to wear their masks and that the masks are fitted correctly.

About Face Fit Testing

Face Fit Testing is a method that is used to identify how fitting a facepiece matches an individual. An inappropriate facepiece will substantially reduce the needed protection, so it is required to meet the safety criteria.

Furthermore, there are two types of Face Fit Testing - qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative method is specifically designed for testing of filtering facepieces (disposable masks) and half masks but not full face masks, as it is based on tasting or smelling a bitter, sweet or odorous compound. Whereas quantitative is designed for all types of masks and is also known as Fit Factor. It is based on numerical calculations of the efficiency of the fit.

About Belfast

Belfast is the capital of and largest city in Northern Ireland, as well as the second largest city in Ireland. It is the seat of devolved government and legislative Northern Ireland Assembly. The city forms part of the largest urban area in Northern Ireland, and the main settlement in the province of Ulster. The city of Belfast has a population of 267,500 and lies at the heart of the Belfast urban area, which has a population of 483,418. The Larger Urban Zone, as defined by the European Union, has a total population 641,638. Belfast was granted city status in 1888. Historically, Belfast has been a centre for the Irish linen industry (earning the nickname "Linenopolis"), tobacco production, rope-making and shipbuilding: the city's main shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff, which built the ill-fated RMS Titanic, propelled Belfast on to the global stage in the early 20th century as the largest and most productive shipyard in the world. Belfast played a key role in the Industrial Revolution, establishing its place as a global industrial centre until the latter half of the 20th century.
